About Unsuccessful Applications

It can be disappointing to find out that your application for Ontario Trillium Foundation funding has not been successful. After hours of work to collect information, confirm references and prepare the paperwork, you find that your program, plan or project has been declined. What went wrong?

Very often, nothing. While OTF is one of Canada’s leading grantmaking foundations, we are able to fund less than half of all the requests we receive. For every dollar that we have available to grant, we receive approximately $3.50 in requests.

Sometimes, there are very practical reasons why an application is not successful. Whenever possible, we try to advise organizations when we receive an application that is incomplete, one that doesn't qualify, or where there are a large of number of similar requests in their particular community or area. Unfortunately, these issues are not always apparent until after the deadline for submission has passed and the application has been formally reviewed.

While it’s impossible for OTF to provide specific feedback about every application, there are some general categories of reasons that applications are declined. Here, we have collected resource material pertaining to some of these.

From the menu on the left-hand side of the screen, click on the subject heading to find more information about OTF policies, priorities and processes that relate to funding applications and evaluations.

If you would like to discuss specific details about your particular application, please contact your local OTF office and arrange to speak with the Program Manager for your area. (*There is no appeals process. All granting decisions are based on specific criteria described in our Program Guidelines and on local priorities identified by local Grant Review Teams.)

For a quick overview of the Foundation, its activities, governance structure and regional offices, please see the
OTF Fact Sheet.
