Hockey legend scores $171,000 for youth
Herbert H. Carnegie’s dream to play in the National Hockey League was as clear as the ice he skated on. Unfortunately, 50 years ago, the former Quebec Aces hockey player’s dream was denied because of his colour.
Recently, Markham MPP, the Hon. David Tsubouchi, and GRT member Michael Lindsay announced a $171,000 OTF grant to the Herbert H. Carnegie Future Aces Foundation. They joined Mr. Carnegie and over 600 students and staff at Wilclay Public School in Markham in pledging their commitment to a world free of the racism that kept Mr. Carnegie off the ice.
The Future Aces Foundation strives to foster civic responsibility and ethical behavior, and to assist youth to attain the highest level of educational achievement within their capabilities, offering self-confidence and anti-racism programming in public schools throughout the regions of York, Peel, Durham and the GTA. Thanks to Herbert H. Carnegie’s vision, this funding will touch the lives of 50,000 students signing on as Future Aces. |
