Fun with Books: Discovering the magic of reading

Like riding a bike or finally tying their shoes, for many preschoolers, reading a book for the first time represents a memory that lasts forever. This year, more than 2,000 children in the counties of Leeds and Grenville will discover the magic of reading for the first time thanks to the efforts of Fun with Books, a volunteer-run preschool literacy program, supported in part by the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Aimed at promoting the benefits of reading to preschoolers and their parents, Fun with Books distributes monthly book packages free of charge to registered participants. Caregivers are then encouraged to spend time reading with their children, helping to reinforce the benefits of literacy, introducing skills that preschoolers will develop in Grade 1 and encouraging a love for books they will carry throughout their lifetimes.

The three-year $80,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant will assist Fun with Books in touching the lives of even more children in years to come, evaluating program effectiveness to ensure maximum success, and enhancing outreach efforts and understanding.
