Enhancing safety in the arts
In many parts of Ontario, community theatres are often the only performing arts venue available for arts and culture groups. Many budding young professionals get their first opportunity to perform in community theatres. It is here that the public is able to enjoy performances by local talents.
While they contribute significantly to the artistic life of the community and provide opportunities for career development, many community theatres face health and safety challenges. So that these challenges do not become barriers to volunteerism in the future, Theatre Ontario was awarded a grant of $273,800 to launch an educational program called To Act in Safety. The program will assess health and safety readiness in community theatres, deliver first-aid training for front-of-house volunteers, and provide health and safety training in selected theatres across Ontario. St. John’s Council of Ontario, the Ontario Service Safety Alliance and the Association of Summer Theatres ’Round Ontario will be partners in this initiative, which will help ensure the safety of community volunteers and theatre audiences. |
