Thirty-Six Province-Wide Groups Receive More Than $6 Million in Grants
Toronto, April 7, 2008 – Communities across Ontario will benefit from Province-Wide Program grants recently approved by the Board of Directors of the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Ontario Minister of Culture Aileen Carroll noted that many of the 38 grants totalling $6,768,900 will help umbrella organizations meet local needs and enhance community spaces. Funding will improve accessibility and comfort, increase energy efficiency or be used for innovative technology.
“Our government is committed to fostering healthy and vibrant communities, right across Ontario,” said Minister Carroll. “These Ontario Trillium Foundation grants will help build a stronger province by fuelling local economies and improving the quality of life of Ontarians.”
Parks and Recreation Ontario will receive $348,200 over 18 months to develop a web-based platform to help the organizations members find resources, share information and take part in discussions and forums. TechSoup Canada c/o Centre for Social Innovation will be awarded $310,000 over two years to establish a program that will provide Ontario not-for-profit organizations with access to donated software, hardware and technology expertise worth millions of dollars.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario. Ontario's 2008 spring budget boosted the Foundation's annual funding to $110 million from $105 million, which will be further increased to $120 million by 2009-2010.
The Province-Wide grants listed below were approved by the OTF Board of Directors on March 6, 2008:
Alpine Ontario c/o Freestyle Skiing Ontario
$192,500 over three years to develop Ski Cross, the newest Olympic sport. Programs for coaching, officials and ski-course design will be offered and technical and safety standards developed for youth high-performance and university-race events.
Anishinaabek Mushkegowuk Onkwehonwe Language Commission of Oniatari':io
$405,000 over three years to build the organizational capacity to develop policy and co-ordinate research to preserve and standardize 13 languages representing all 134 First Nations in Ontario.
Architectural Conservancy of Ontario
$79,200 over one year to train volunteers to research and articulate the cultural value and economic impact of designating heritage conservation districts, in order to preserve areas in the Niagara region and southwestern and eastern Ontario.
ArtsCan Circle
$197,300 over three years to build operational capacity and deliver arts-education programming to First Nation children and youth in Mishkeegogamong, Pikangikum, Thunder Bay and Wabassemoong (White Dog).
Association des auteures et auteurs de l'Ontario français
$50,000 over one year to conduct an organizational review, develop a strategic plan and organize community consultations. These initiatives will increase the capacity of this Francophone authors' association to offer services across Ontario.
Boundless Adventures Association
$150,000 over two years to help family members become key figures in the rehabilitation of people with acquired brain injuries (ABI). Physical education, team building and life-skill development programs will be offered to ABI clients and families.
Building Tree Planting Capacity in Ontario Communities c/o Trees Ontario
$240,100 over three years to identify gaps in stakeholder capacity for broad-scale tree planting initiatives. The project will identify and disseminate model projects and create a tree-planting implementation strategy across Ontario.
Canadahelps / CanaDon
$169,000 over 18 months to conduct an outreach program for small and medium-size charities across the province. Needs for education about on-line technologies will be assessed and tools developed to support better use of these in advancing their work.
Canadian Band Association (Ontario)
$7,500 over one year to organize a conference in Kitchener-Waterloo, create a music library and conduct a survey. These activities will enable brass bands to collectively celebrate their culture and contributions to communities across Ontario.
Canadian Federation for Sexual Health
$9,600 over one year for French-language translation of an upgraded website that offers sexual and reproductive health information for Franco-Ontarians.
Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society
$247,000 over three years to launch the Big Wild Challenge, an innovative social-networking program that will encourage citizens across Ontario to protect the boreal forest.
Children's Water Education Council
$273,800 over two years to increase understanding of water issues across Ontario. Dynamic, high-quality learning experiences will be provided to children and youth in order to conserve water and prevent pollution.
Composting Council of Canada
$65,000 over two years to encourage children to grow vegetables and contribute their harvest to food banks by developing and pilot testing the Plant A Row - Grow A Row Junior program in 10 Ontario communities.
Family Supports Institute Ontario
$306,000 over three years to develop the organizational capacity of this new institute to help grow its membership and develop strong governance so it can better foster best practices to advance the well being of Ontario families.
Franco-Ontarian I&R Collaborative c/o Findhelp Information Services/Services d'information Findhelp
$499,300 over two years for a collaborative of French-and English-language information providers who will expand the province's capacity to deliver French-language information by telephone through Ontario's 211 services.

$42,700 over one year to build an interactive on-line database to improve member services and communications. Digital equipment will also be purchased to support the professional development of artists in Ontario communities.

$90,000 over three years to engage youth through poetry and spoken words workshops led by professional poets in Ottawa, Sudbury and Toronto. The grant will also make the www.youngpoets.ca website bilingual and foster cultural expression and literacy.
Making a Difference c/o Boost Child Abuse Prevention & Intervention
$201,000 over two years to train more than 500 multidisciplinary trainers to deliver child-abuse prevention programs to front-line staff and volunteers in 14 locations across Ontario.
Maple Leaf Theatre for Social Responsibility (Mixed Company)
$120,000 over three years to mentor staff, expand touring networks and arts education activities to reach young people in schools, colleges and universities across Ontario.
National Campus and Community Radio Association
$120,300 over two years to strengthen operational capacity, membership services, communications and fundraising. The association will then be able to better serve Ontario community and campus radio stations in every region of the province.
The New Mentality c/o Children's Mental Health Ontario
$70,700 over one year to conduct a youth evaluation of The New Mentality approaches to building effective adult/youth partnerships. Findings will help lead to a stronger child and youth mental-health system in Ontario.

$43,200 to develop strategic and operational plans and promotional materials. These will help to build the capacity of the organization, enabling it to recruit and service in-line hockey leagues and members across Ontario.

$210,000 over three years to launch the Great Waterfront Trail Adventure Tour, a family-friendly cycling event from Niagara to Quebec that encourages use of the waterfront trail and increases active transportation across central and eastern Ontario.
Wilderness Canoe Association
$56,100 over three years to update and operate the Canadian Canoe Routes website, which provides users with access to more than 500 Canadian canoe routes. Quarterly journal entries from the last 30 years will also be digitized and uploaded.

Toronto, December 3, 2007 - Communities across Ontario will benefit from Province-Wide Program grants recently approved by the Board of the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Ontario Minister of Culture Aileen Carroll announced that funding totalling $6,062,600 will help 36 large or umbrella organizations meet a variety of needs in the arts and culture, environment, human and social services, and sports and recreation sectors.
“For 25 years, the Ontario Trillium Foundation has built healthy and vibrant communities, one community organization at a time,” said Minister Carroll. “Ontarians live better lives today because of the good things community organizations do in their communities.”
Grants from OTF’s Province-Wide Program make a difference across Ontario. SkillsInternational.ca c/o WIL Counselling & Training for Employment will receive $248,700 over two years to develop interview-practice software enhancement for the Skills International website. This tool will help foreign-trained professionals across Ontario to develop interview skills appropriate to the Canadian market. Canadian Epilepsy Alliance/Alliance canadienne de l'épilepsie will be awarded $224,100 over two years for outreach, communications and media purchases to help Ontario youth and young adults learn the facts about epilepsy and challenge their peers to become more knowledgeable, tolerant and accepting of others.
OTF is an agency of the Government of Ontario. Its annual funding was boosted to $105 million from $100 million in 2007 and will be further increased to $120 million in 2009-2010. This enhanced funding has resulted in an increase to the maximum amount available for capital grants and the creation of a $2 million Future Fund, which will focus this year on strengthening the impact of organizations working on environmental issues.

$183,100 over two years to develop tools, resources and supports to improve the planning of aquatic facilities. Planned and existing facilities will then be better able to meet needs in their respective communities.
Artist Run Centres and Collectives of Ontario
$54,000 over one year for Hot Buttons, a national conference in Ottawa to stimulate an intergenerational exchange of ideas, foster innovation and collaboration, and find new ways to engage Aboriginal, culturally-diverse and Francophone communities.
ArtsSmarts Network c/o Canadian Education Association
$71,300 over six months for networking meetings, communications and an administrator to create a new national arts-education organization. Resources will enable educators, artists and communities to engage youth through arts education in Ontario.

$57,500 over one year in order to conduct a comprehensive study of existing resources in the Francophone community. An interactive database will then be developed to help not-for-profit Francophone organizations meet the needs of their communities.

$35,000 over one year to provide Francophone students in five regions of Ontario with information on legal careers through a website and the development of educational materials.
Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted
$52,800 over one year to develop a volunteer co-ordination program that will improve the effectiveness of volunteers who provide advice to legislators and the judiciary and offer support to people who believe they have been wrongly convicted.
Better Child Care Ontario Inc.
$48,800 over one year to revise and enhance the Child Care Management Guide to support quality not-for-profit child care services across Ontario. An e-learning guide for board treasurers and a network discussion forum will also be created.
Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists, Ontario Chapter
$162,900 over three years to enhance organizational capacity by hiring full-time staff to sustain operations, forge strategic partnerships and improve member services, programs and networks for dance artists.
The Canadian Community Economic Development Network
$280,000 over three years to build the sustainability of the organization’s Ontario branch and the sector through learning activities, a provincial internship program and a renewed model for technical assistance.

Everdale Environmental Learning Centre
$140,500 over four years to hire an experienced staff member who will help develop effective models of sustainable farming programs and deliver sustainable living workshops in south central Ontario. (Another OTF grant will support this activity)
Habitat for Humanity Canada
$209,600 over two years to enhance the ReStore program and hire a distribution manager for Ontario. Funds will improve learning about effective management, create volunteer opportunities, generate revenue for home building and promote recycling.
J.D. Griffin Adolescent Centre
$300,100 over three years to develop, pilot and evaluate a ReachOut program that supports youth with diverse sexual and gender identities, including people with intellectual disabilities.
Laubach Literacy Ontario
$163,000 over 18 months for six pilot member agencies to complete research, planning, organizational and fund development stages. This will help prepare them to fully implement social enterprise projects to increase revenue and income.
New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA)
$60,000 over three years to deliver the organization’s youth education initiative through sound art workshops. These will help to foster artistic creation, mentorship and learning in Kingston, Mississauga, Ottawa and Toronto schools.
Northern Ontario Agri-Food Education and Marketing Assoc.
$80,600 over two years to reach out to Northern agri-food related organizations, co-ordinate marketing efforts, recruit volunteers and develop educational materials. These efforts will help increase public understanding and support for local farmers.
Ontario Association of Art Galleries
$82,200 over 17 months to strengthen operational capacity through an organizational review, business plan and the expansion of networks to engage more Aboriginal, culturally-diverse and Francophone communities.
Ontario Australian Football League (OAFL)
$25,000 over six months to obtain expert advice and develop a comprehensive and sustainable growth strategy to enhance the league’s ability to provide children and youth with this healthy physical activity.
Ontario Disc Sports Association
$189,900 over two years to build capacity at the provincial and local levels, helping to establish new leagues, outreach to potential participants and develop a certified coaching program.
Ontario Network of Employment Skills Training Projects (ONESTEP)
$344,000 over two years to offer small, vulnerable not-for-profit agencies that deliver labour market programs a guided mentoring service. Funds will help them identify and focus on courses of action to become financially vibrant.

$47,400 over one year to develop and distribute A Landowner's Guide to Careful Logging to 10,000 woodlot owners. The guide will help promote the sustainable management of private woodlots in Southern Ontario.

$103,800 over one year to undertake a comprehensive, community-based, strategic and sustainable planning process. The project will clarify or identify needed changes to the organization’s mandate and set strategic directions for the next five years.
Red Sky Performance
$250,000 over three years for the Deep Waters Project, which will help build operational capacity, create a Northern network for presenting new work and bring arts performances and activities to rural and remote First Nation communities.

Wildlife Conservation Society Canada (WCS)
$270,800 over three years to strengthen its administrative, communications and fundraising capacity. Effectiveness in field research and work with diverse stakeholders will increase to conserve wildlife habitat in Ontario's boreal forest.
YMCA Strong Kids c/o YMCA of Greater Toronto
$265,800 over three years to provide training, resources and tools to 27 local YMCAs. Funds will help increase their capacity to deliver the annual YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, giving children and families in financial need access to programs.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Ontario
$225,700 over two years to build the association’s capacity so it can assist member clubs to become healthier and financially vibrant. Better programs and resources will be offered, supporting the healthy development of children, youth and families.
Building Capacity to Achieve Best Environmental Practices in First Nations Communities c/o Environmental Defence
$195,600 over one year to create strategies which will improve First Nations' ability to protect the environment and human health. Workshops will be offered to 300 participants across Ontario on best practices in managing environmental issues.
Building The Water Guardians Network Across Ontario c/o Canadian Environmental Law Association
$202,200 over two years to build the technical capacity of the network’s members to engage the public and develop source-water protection plans. The result will be more effective source-water protection for Ontario.
Canadian Land Trust Alliance
$12,000 over six months to support the first Canadian Land Trust Alliance conference, which is taking place at the National Conference Centre in Ottawa from October 18 to 20, 2007.
The Canary Research Institute for Mining, Environmental and Health
$126,600 over three years to build the capacity of First Nations communities to make informed decisions on mining issues. Funds will allow northern Aboriginal participants to attend their provincial Annual Gathering in Sault Ste. Marie.
Chinese Canadian National Council
$225,000 over 33 months to celebrate 150 years of Chinese-Canadian contributions to Canadian society through youth leadership forums, school activities and a touring exhibit in Kitchener-Waterloo, London, Ottawa, Toronto and York Region.
Disabled Sailing Association of Ontario
$154,800 over three years to purchase equipment, train volunteers and increase the association’s revenue. More participants with disabilities will then be able to take part in recreational and competitive sailing opportunities in Ontario.
Faith & the Common Good
$124,000 over one year to develop and deliver a program that provides energy-efficiency audits, retrofits and green education to faith communities. More individuals will be helped to take action on climate change at home and in the faith community.
The Framework Foundation
$198,000 over three years to hold a series of Timeraiser events across Ontario, which will inspire young people in their 20s and 30s to help build stronger communities by volunteering with not-for-profit organizations and/or charities.
Great Lakes United Foundation
$201,700 over two years to strengthen the leadership capacity of 13 community-based public advisory councils to restore and protect the water and environment of the Great Lakes.
Lymphovenous Association of Ontario
$89,600 over three years to better serve Ontarians affected by lymphedema. This will be accomplished by opening a provincial office, enhancing a website, building volunteer skills and hiring part-time staff.
The Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Association of Ontario
$154,500 over three years to improve the organization's capacity to serve Ontarians living with myalgic encephalomyelitis, known as chronic fatigue syndrome. An office will be opened to house services and educational materials and raise funds.
National Council on Canada Arab Relations
$50,500 over one year to establish a network of Arab organizations across Ontario. Communications, co-operation and efficiency will increase and plans will be developed to sustain the network and encourage more volunteers to participate.
Nishnawbe Aski Nation
$536,500 over three years to improve the quality of life in 49 First Nations communities in Northern Ontario. Training, workshops and materials will be provided to increase women’s capacity to be leaders and take action for healthier communities.
Ontario 4-H Council
$58,100 over one year to identify best practices, develop them into a library and incorporate them into training programs and resources. The volunteer base of 51 local associations across the province will be further strengthened and developed.
Ontario Community Support Association
$133,500 over one year to deliver a series of learning sessions on volunteer management to both English and French not-for profit groups across the province.
Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants
$258,300 over two years to establish organizational standards for immigrant and refugee-serving organizations in Ontario. Support will be provided to ensure organizations are able to operate and remain responsive, innovative and effective.
Ontario Council of Folk Festivals
$150,000 over three years to enhance capacity and improve services, expand youth programs and reach more culturally diverse groups. An economic-impact study and marketing plan will be completed to advance not-for-profit folk festivals in Ontario.
Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations
$399,500 over three years to increase physical activity by expanding the Try Day program. More youth aged 13 to 19 years will then be able to participate in non-traditional sports or physical activities in intramural programs or leagues.
Ontario Tennis Association
$258,100 over three years to implement Give Tennis a Shot, a fitness program using tennis skills and games to help address physical inactivity and obesity in children aged 6 to 12 years.
Ontario Track and Field Association
$190,700 over 30 months to implement the Road Warrior race handicapping system, which will help to increase participation in road races and improve the fitness levels of runners across Ontario.
Paralympics Ontario
$401,700 over four years to provide training, equipment, resources and ongoing support for coaches and volunteers to develop 11 sustainable community sport clubs for people with disabilities across Ontario.
Reciprocity in Capacity Building on Farming Issues and Genetic Engineering in Rural and Urban Ontario c/o The Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario
$52,000 over one year for education materials and community events. The capacity of farm and food organizations will be enhanced, helping to meet public demand for updated information on genetic engineering, organic and local food and farm issues.
Shelternet
$61,200 over six months for a consultation and planning process. Shelters and transition houses across Ontario will be consulted to produce business plans that support the prevention of violence to women and increase the sustainability of Shelternet.
Square and Round Dancers of South Western Ontario Inc.
$14,300 over one year to implement the ABC dance program, which will provide more recreational dancing opportunities and attract more participants to square dancing clubs in Southwestern Ontario.
TakingITGlobal Youth Association
$137,800 over two years to expand a youth-driven civic engagement program. Training and networking opportunities will be provided to 80 youth organizations on-line and in person in Ottawa, Toronto, Timmins and Thunder Bay.
Timmins Transition Committee c/o Cochrane Temiskaming Children's Treatment Centre
$211,800 over three years to develop and implement a community-wide framework for service delivery. Children and young people with special needs and their families will be provided with seamless access to services and support in Timmins and area.
Uth Ink Team c/o Playwrights Guild of Canada
$195,900 over 33 months to produce Uth Ink: Playwrights in the Community. The program engages youth through playwriting mentorships, promoting creative expression and volunteerism in 35 Ontario communities.
Visual Arts Ontario
$150,000 over two years to conduct an organizational review, develop a strategic plan, and organize community consultations and arts events. Relationships and networks will be formed to help artists better integrate into urban and rural Ontario.
Voices for Children - Toronto
$356,300 over three years for communication materials, computer equipment and staffing. A Children’s Agenda for Ontario will be developed, and youth and network members will be mobilized to promote positive change for Ontario's children and youth.
Water Incident Research Alliance
$166,500 over two years to train volunteers to collect data on water-related incidents. Risk management tools and strategies will be developed, helping municipalities and organizations to reduce water-related injuries and fatalities in Ontario.
